Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Why Sunnyvale Homeowners Choose HeatShield Chimney Cleaning
Chimney Cleaning Sunnyvale provides independent HeatShield chimney cleaning, inspection, and repair service throughout Sunnyvale, with a focus on flue resurfacing, firebox repair, and crown coating work. As an independent service provider, we’re not affiliated with or authorized by HeatShield, and we say that plainly because you deserve to know exactly who’s working on your flue. What sets our HeatShield work apart in Sunnyvale is that we’re as careful about the substrate underneath as we are about the product on top, and we read the flue after cure rather than just before. Call (833) 593-7116 for a free estimate. We answer 24/7. Fast dispatch from 7am to 7pm, Sunday through Friday.
Sunnyvale’s chimney work is dominated by 1950s-70s ranch and Eichler-era tract homes built for the postwar aerospace and Lockheed workforce. Original brick fireplaces and unlined clay-tile flues are still common, and rarely see fire. In this housing stock, a HeatShield lining isn’t a cosmetic upgrade. It’s often the difference between a flue that can safely carry combustion gases and one that’s quietly shedding clay tile into the smoke shelf. The mild Mediterranean climate means few burn days, so those flues sit cold for long stretches. Winter rain leaks and summer seismic shaking do more damage than fire ever does. When we arrive at a Sunnyvale home for HeatShield service, we’re usually inspecting a dormant, cracked flue more than sweeping heavy creosote. That’s the reality of this market, and it shapes how we approach every job.
Kurt Jessup, Owner at Chimney Cleaning Sunnyvale, grew up near the Murphy Avenue corridor and has been working chimneys in the South Bay for close to two decades. He’s known locally for being thorough with creosote inspections and straight with homeowners about what a flue actually needs versus what it doesn’t. If the flue isn’t clear, the fire isn’t safe – everything else is secondary.
Why Trust Chimney Cleaning Sunnyvale for Your HeatShield Chimney Cleaning?
HeatShield resurfacing is a specialized restoration method, and it’s not something every chimney company offers. We perform HeatShield resurfacing and repair work on a routine basis, mixing and curing the product to its published specs. The difference shows in the details: a properly mixed Cerfractory liner cures without mud-cracking, a properly bonded firebox patch doesn’t delaminate after the first hot fire, and a properly sloped crown coat doesn’t lift after one winter. Our technicians read the flue after cure, not just before closing up the job.
We specify HeatShield’s OEM compounds and resins for resurfacing and crown work. Substituting generic refractory mortar is what causes most redo jobs we see in Sunnyvale. The product chemistry matters. Mix ratios matter. Cure time matters. When someone cuts a corner on any of those, the failure shows up months or years later, and the homeowner pays twice.
Kurt learned the fundamentals of building systems and combustion ventilation through the HVAC and construction technology program at Evergreen Valley College in San Jose, then spent years in the trade refining that knowledge on real jobs across Santa Clara County. That background matters when we’re evaluating whether a HeatShield application is holding, or whether the substrate underneath has failed. We repair the existing flue or firebox when the substrate is sound, and recommend replacement only when spalling or structural damage has gone past what resurfacing can hold. No pressure, no mystery. Inspect, explain, then repair.

Common HeatShield Chimney Cleaning Problems We Fix in Sunnyvale
- Delamination and flaking of a prior HeatShield lining. The most common cause is straightforward: the original flue wasn’t cleaned to bare masonry before the product went on. HeatShield needs a mechanically sound, clean substrate to bond. When it’s applied over creosote residue, soot film, or crumbling clay tile, it eventually separates in sheets or flakes. We remove the failed material, prep the flue the way it should have been prepped the first time, and recoat properly.
- Cracking or mud-crack patterns in Cerfractory liners. This kind of HeatShield product is a cast-in-place flue lining, and it fails when it’s applied too thick or when the required reinforcing mesh was left out. Sunnyvale’s mild climate doesn’t cause freeze-thaw stress, but thermal cycling still works on a liner that’s too thick to flex. We identify mud-cracking during a Level 2 inspection and correct it with a reapplication at the proper thickness.
- Separation from the firebox back wall and throat. The firebox sees the most extreme temperature swings in the whole system. Over time, a HeatShield firebox patch can lift away from the masonry behind it, exposing spalled brick or failing mortar. We see this often in postwar ranch homes where the firebrick has been patched repeatedly over decades. We remove the loose material, repair the substrate, and reapply resurfacing compound that stays put.
- Crown Coat failures: cracking, lifting, or water intrusion. A HeatShield crown coat only works if the crown underneath is properly sloped and bonded. When a previous contractor slapped coating over a flat, cracked crown without repairing the base, the coating fails too. Water gets under it, and Sunnyvale’s winter rain does the rest. We rebuild the crown geometry before we coat it.
- Smoke rollback and draft problems after resurfacing. A flue that’s been resurfaced changes its interior dimensions slightly. If the job wasn’t matched to the appliance and flue size, or if the liner wasn’t smoothed properly, draft suffers. Homeowners notice smoke spilling into the living room on a cold start. We diagnose the airflow issue, check the flue with a camera, and correct it.
HeatShield Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach
We choose parts that fit HeatShield equipment correctly. We don’t stock OEM or genuine HeatShield parts, and we won’t pretend to. We order the right compounds, resins, and refractory materials for each job as it comes. The key is selecting a product formulation that matches the application: a cast-in-place liner product behaves differently than a firebox repair mortar, and a crown coat is a separate category entirely. Using the wrong formulation is like using joint compound where you need concrete.
Our repair-vs-replace decision is simple to explain, even when the answer isn’t what you hoped. We replace when the structural substrate has failed: deep spalling, cracked masonry that’s moving, or a flue that’s collapsed beyond what any coating can hold. We repair when the substrate is sound and the failure is in the applied product itself. In Sunnyvale’s older housing stock, we lean toward repair more often than some companies would. A resurfaced flue in a well-built 1960s brick chimney can serve for many more years. But we won’t coat over a failing structure just to make the job cheaper today. That’s how you end up with a redo, and we don’t do redo work for free. Call (833) 593-7116 if you want a straight answer on what your flue actually needs.
Our HeatShield Service Process – Step by Step
1. Diagnosis with a Level 2 inspection. We run a camera through the flue and look at the firebox, smoke chamber, and crown. For a flue that’s previously been resurfaced, we’re looking for separation, cracking, or wear at the bond line. For an unrepaired masonry flue, we’re checking whether the substrate can accept resurfacing at all.
2. Repair or reapplication to spec. We mix HeatShield products to the manufacturer’s published ratios and apply them at the recommended thickness. No guessing, no shortcuts. When reinforcing mesh is required, it goes in. When the crown needs resloping before coating, it gets done.
3. Cure and verification. We respect the cure time the product calls for, then read the flue again with the camera. The post-cure inspection is where most contractors stop. We don’t. We look at the finished surface, check for bridging or pinholing, and confirm the coating is continuous.
4. Test and document. We verify draft and, when applicable, run a smoke test to confirm the flue pulls properly. We document what we found, what we did, and what we’re leaving behind. You see the camera images. You know what you paid for.

FAQs – HeatShield Chimney Cleaning Service in Sunnyvale
Is Chimney Cleaning Sunnyvale authorized by HeatShield?
No. We are an independent chimney company, not affiliated with, authorized by, or sponsored by HeatShield. We work with HeatShield products because they perform well when applied correctly, and our technicians have the hands-on experience to do the job right. If you’d like to verify how we handle a specific HeatShield repair, call (833) 593-7116 and ask us directly.
Does HeatShield resurfacing require a Level 2 inspection first?
Yes. A Level 2 inspection is the only way to know whether the flue substrate is sound enough to accept resurfacing, and it’s the only way to document what the flue looked like before the product went on. We don’t apply HeatShield over a flue we haven’t inspected with a camera. If you have a flue that’s been lined before and you’re wondering whether the lining is still doing its job, the place to start is a camera inspection. Call (833) 593-7116 for a free estimate.
Can HeatShield fix a firebox with spalled brick, or does it need replacement?
It depends on how much brick has spalled and whether the masonry behind it is still sound. A firebox back wall with a large spalled patch and mortar separating behind it can often be repaired by removing the loose material, rebuilding the substrate, and applying HeatShield resurfacing compound over the repaired area. But if the structural brick has shifted or the damage runs deep into the throat, replacement may be the only credible option. We’ll show you the camera footage and tell you straight which side of that line your firebox falls on.
Will a HeatShield crown coat stop my crown from cracking again?
A HeatShield crown coat will stop water intrusion only if the crown underneath is properly sloped and bonded first. If the crown is flat, cracked, or lifting, coating it without repairing the base is a temporary bandage. In Sunnyvale, winter rain is the main thing a crown has to resist. We rebuild the crown geometry, then coat. When that sequence is followed, the crown coat holds. When it isn’t, it fails. That’s usually the difference between a redo and a long-term fix.
Is it safe to burn in a fireplace with an older HeatShield lining?
Older HeatShield linings can be safe, but they need to be inspected. The failure modes we see in Sunnyvale are delamination, mud-cracking from over-thick application, or separation at the firebox and throat. Any of those can expose masonry that isn’t meant to handle direct flame impingement or flue gases. If you’re not sure how old your lining is or who put it in, get a camera inspection before you burn. The cost of finding out is a lot less than the cost of a chimney fire.
Do you service HeatShield installations only, or also DuraFlex and Gelco liners?
We service both. HeatShield resurfacing is the right call for many Sunnyvale flues, especially in older brick chimneys with clay tile liners. But not every flue is a candidate for resurfacing. When a chimney has offsets or unusual geometry, a DuraFlex flexible liner may be the better choice. Gelco liners are also in our wheelhouse. We’ll recommend what fits your flue’s actual geometry, not the product we’re most comfortable selling. Call (833) 593-7116 to talk through your options, and we’ll give you a straight assessment.
How much does HeatShield chimney cleaning cost in Sunnyvale?
The estimate is free and the price is set per job by written estimate. HeatShield work varies significantly because a simple cleaning is a very different job from a full flue resurfacing or firebox repair. The condition of your substrate, the size of the flue, and the scope of crown work all move the number. We don’t quote over the phone, and we don’t give ballparks that turn out to mean nothing. We inspect, then we write a number. Call (833) 593-7116 for a free estimate.
